After all the kerfuffle of moving house, today, I managed to get out on my first ride since the last weekend of February. We’ve had a few days of cracking weather last week and was hoping it would last into the weekend, it wasn’t as sunny but it stayed dry so I was happy. After getting up at 4:30am to watch the first F1 gp of the year I was out early on the first day of Spring ……. On the ribble! With the newly fitted saddle, the Fizik Aliante VSX Kium.
Heading out from our new place to the New Forest shaves about 6/7 miles from my old regular routes, now meaning I can travel a little further in on the same timescale. This is great as I don’t get a huge amount of free time at weekends and miss out on hitting some of the more picturesque routes and tougher climbs.
Today I headed out to Sopley, then towards Ringwood, back to Braggers Lane, then Burley, Crow, Bransgore, Highcliffe, and back into Christchurch. A nice little 27 mile loop.
It was the first real road test of my new Fizik saddle, Marc at Bournemouth Cycles Works helped identify this for me using the Trek pressure analysis add on to his bike fitting system. The saddle was great, not a bit of pain! Yes it was a little solid and needs a break in but I can imagine it’s only going to get smoother. I’m looking forward to getting some miles in on it.
Six months off of the ribble have made me a little rusty with gears, with a few moments where I was using the gears rather than my legs. It’s a totally different beast to the charge, with speed up the climbs but needing a little more effort on the flat. This is mainly down to the wheels. The tyres were also a little suspect, despite having 100psi in them, sounding a little tractor like. Maybe time for some 25mm open tubulars, with a larger footprint and more supple casing. Something to up the Ribble’s compliance!
It was good to be out, back on the ribble, and with a comfortable saddle today. It looks to be a great year of riding ahead………
