Repost from @bicyclingmag. This point has never been more true. Bike shops around the U.K. are failing, and closing because of poor customer service and inability to change. The worst thing is we have publications in the U.K. writing articles titled ‘how not to be a dick in bike shops’ protecting this poor behaviour. If a customer doesn’t buy something from a shop it’s no fault but the shops. Bike shops have had it good for too long, resting on huge margins rather than looking at volume. It’s a price conscious world out there and if you aren’t willing to go the distance to establish why your customer is prepared to buy online you wont make the sale. You need to counteract their perceptions with your service, and if needs be.... discount or you would have made 100% of nothing. Customers do actually know what they are talking about, have access to just as much information as your regular shop worker, and hell some of have more experience. And when customers don’t know what they are talking about you need to be damn sure they do when they leave your shop, if they don’t you have failed. Condescending attitude will push customers away, they are the greatest field agents you could ever hope for. Good service sells itself and moves price further down the list of customer priorities. People buy on value for money. Gender, size, and age are also lost on some of the failing shops in the U.K. The over weight guy wants a plus sized mountain bike? No he wants a commuter. The older woman wants a hybrid ebike? No she wants a road bike. The front line experience of getting people cycling is in bike shops hands, if people feel switching out of their car will be hard work because of where they get their bike maintained or that cycling in poor weather/night is unsafe then guess what? That’s another person back in their car. The least bike shops need to do is raise their game to retail industry standard levels of customer service, have that want to factor in capturing the sales, and want to actively promote cycling in any form to any customer in their community. . Very proud to be a Lusso brand ambassador. This kit just keeps getting better. Today I rode in the new RS19 bib shorts and the Velocity R1 breath jersey. Both have a race fit and create minimal drag, which was exactly what I needed today with my lead legs after a heavy week running.
